Could a rug be a sailor's best friend? Anyone who has spent any time at sea will be aware of the novel forms of wear and tear on equipment and clothing you experience that you'd never consider would be an issue while on dry land. Everyone has heard of coir matting as a hardwearing and durable natural fibre, but few realise the specific properties and advantages that having it on board your boat are.
On any short to medium voyage through rough weather it doesn't take long for any and all towels to quickly be deployed. This means that before long you have wet bodies on your carpets, or worse, wet towels. Coir matting is not only very waterproof compared to other types of similar matting, but it is also resistant to salt water damage. This means by replacing your carpets or rugs with coir matting you can stop worrying about that sloshing water meaning an expensive refit when you get back to harbour.
Coir matting is made from the tough fibres that surround the seed of the coconut palm. These are woven in to sheets before often being coated with PVC or some form of plastic to give it added durability – a key component of any sailing equipment. In fact, coir matting has been used by sailors and fishermen in the Indian ocean for centuries, meaning not only has its production been highly refined but it has received the ultimate road test (or sea test) possible.
