Carpet

Carpets have been manufactured all across the world by people of many different cultures for thousands of years. One of the most popular styles of carpet is the Turkish carpet or rug, which is a popular decorative item found in the homes of many people around the world, not just in Turkey. A Turkish carpet will typically be made of wool and are usually always decorated with richly coloured traditional Turkish patterns and designs. It is this designs that make Turkish carpets so sought after as an ornamental item, however they were originally created because of the drastically low night time temperatures in Turkey. Turkish people traditionally sit on the floor so a warm carpet was a feature of many homes that allowed people to comfortably sit even in the low night time temperatures.

Luxurious, hand made carpets similar to those commonly found in Turkey have long been a part of many Middle Eastern cultures. Persian carpets are also widely recognised as being some of the finest carpets in the world and there is a long established tradition of carpet making in Iran and the other regions that were formerly known as Persia. A Persian carpet is considered to be a luxury item and carpets made in this traditional style are very popular souvenirs with tourists visiting this region. A Persian carpet can be extremely elaborate and their manufacture is painstakingly time consuming as they are always entirely hand made.
